# PDF Insight

> PDF Insight is a 100% local, private desktop app (macOS and Windows) that sorts a client's whole pile of tax and accounting PDFs into one ordered, merged filing PDF — using an on-device AI. In the default local tier, nothing leaves the machine: no upload, no server, no third-party copy of client data. Built for Quebec and Canadian tax slips (T4, RL-1, T4A, T5, RL-3, RL-31, REER/RRSP, FHSA), bilingual in English and French. Made for accountants and bookkeepers.

## Key facts

- **What it does:** Reads, classifies, and orders every document in a client folder using your own sorting rules, then exports one merged, correctly-ordered PDF per client.
- **Privacy (the core promise):** The default **local tier** runs entirely on the user's own computer. Client tax PDFs are processed on-device and are never uploaded. Nothing leaves the machine.
- **Local AI stack:** A local large language model via **Ollama** does the classification; scanned documents are read with on-device **OCR (Tesseract)**. Both run on-device.
- **Speed:** A real 11-document client bundle is organized in **about 100 seconds** fully locally on a 16GB Mac.
- **Optional cloud speed lane:** A clearly-labelled, opt-in, **paid cloud tier (Cerebras)** processes the same work in roughly one second of compute. Documents only leave the machine if the user explicitly enables this. It is never the default.
- **Offline:** The local tier works fully offline. The licence check is offline-tolerant with a grace window, so it does not break on air-gapped tax-season machines.
- **Platforms:** macOS and Windows (desktop application).
- **Languages:** English and French (Quebec / fr-CA).
- **Supported tax slips:** T4, T4A, T5, RL-1, RL-3, RL-31, RRSP/REER contribution receipts, FHSA — plus any other document type via custom rules.
- **Built for:** Solo and small accounting / bookkeeping firms, especially in Quebec and the rest of Canada. Built in Quebec.
- **Positioning vs. competitors:** TaxDome, SmartVault, and Canopy are cloud document vaults that store client files on their servers and charge per seat. PDF Insight is a local organizer that pre-sorts and merges the pile before it ever reaches a vault — a complement, not a replacement — with no third-party copy of client data to breach.
